The stave churches of Norway are among our country's greatest attractions. The Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments is responsible for the administration of five medieval churches in the Sogn district: four stave churches and one of stone. All are located around the Sognefjord, Urnes being the best known. Sogn is the only district in Norway to retain so many medieval stave churches and also stone churches from the same period.
